Penny Dreadful Season 2 Finale Review

Hey People,

I am not satisfied with this ending. This goes back to what I previously have said on another show, usually 3 things happen in a finale:
  • A major character dies
  • Shit hits the fan (explosions, fighting, or revelations)
  • The calm before the storm (the setup episode before shit hits the fan)
A major character died last week, shit hit the fan last week, and the calm before the storm was the episode before the penultimate episode. You see my problem? By the end of the episode, I was thinking this wasn't a finale, but a premiere. Yes, I know it ends with everyone going their own way, but that was the only thing t
hat had a finale element to the episode. Everything else felt like a premiere to me.

The fight between the witches doesn't last long, which was kind of a let down. They might as well have ended it last week. Eva Green really does have chemistry with anyone. Her and that doll, that's all I have to say. I'm not sure if she killed Lucifer or just made him shut up by destroying the doll. Either way, it ended with Mrs. Poole getting old real quick and Ethan finishing the job. Vanessa finally saw Ethan for what he was and she wasn't scared of him at all. But even in his manic state, Ethan felt shame and scurried away. Lyle isn't dead! Comedy lives to see another day! He ends up shooting a witch. Victor and Sir Malcolm are released from their suicidal thoughts once Mrs. Poole dies and Lyle joins up with them. Sir Malcolm kills another witch along the way. Vanessa joins the group at Sembene's body. He really is dead people, but I think we all knew that.

I'll save my favorite couple for last so I choose...Victor. Victor is still upset that Lily isn't home and he knows exactly where she is. Victor tries to force Lily to come back with him, but Victor should know that he can't control the dead. He shoots Lily and Victor. He should have known the shot wouldn't kill Lily, but man was he shocked to see Dorian unscathed. They really do deserve each other. They bloodied the dance floor together and it made for one great dance scene. It was harsh to see Lily make fun of taking Victor's virginity, but simultaneously, I hate Victor for trying to force Lily to obey him. That's not how you win someone's heart.

I don't really understand why The Creature/John Clare/Caliban would sit in the jail cell for so long when he could have just ripped the bars and kill everyone to begin with. Did he feel the need to stay? I guess after being insulted constantly by that family, he had enough and killed the parents and let the daughter stumble over her dead parents' corpses. Eerie, but the family deserved it.

Finally, the couple that doesn't make sense. Someone is going to have to explain to me why Ethan decided to leave because I can't think of a good enough reason. Your road is not as doomed as mine isn't a good enough reason for them to keep apart. I rather the inspector trap Ethan and ship him back to America than Ethan turning himself in. I know he feels guilty and all, but I don't see how everyone can still leave Vanessa all alone when they've been protecting her for the past 2 seasons. However, I will end on a good note and say the daydream the devil gave Vanessa was a nice break from all the doom and gloom of the show. Vanessa was wearing white!

So what do we have to look forward to next season? Well, a witch is still out there and is now serving Ethan. Me thinks she'll find her way to America. Victor is still in London, but he's spinning out of control with his drug abuse. I don't think the Doctor can help Vanessa or anyone for that matter. I would like his character to get revenge on his creation for breaking his heart. Victor should take down Dorian and Lily. I never cared for Dorian, but once he killed Angelique, I hated his guts. I wouldn't mind if he gets killed next season, maybe Victor can discover his painting. Lily will try to rule the human race and now that she has Dorian as her money bank, maybe she'll work her way around the elite crowd. Sir Malcolm went back to Africa and I hope nothing happens over there and he comes directly back to London. The Creature went to the Arctic and someone said that's what he ends up doing in the books, but I don't see how that benefits him. I mean not many people live there. Maybe he'll end up meeting a female big foot and they end up falling in love with each other. As for Ethan, he's the one I'm looking forward to the most. I can't wait to meet his daddy. Finally Vanessa, I just hope she doesn't go bat crazy. Maybe Lyle can stop by every now and then.

In all seriousness, I hope that when the premiere does come around next year, time passes and everyone comes back to London (maybe except for Ethan, I'm looking forward to meeting his father). I'm worried that we'll get The Walking Dead type episodes (meaning when the group was separated, each group got their own episode). Everyone hated that type of formatting because if you didn't like the character or if the character wasn't strong enough to carry an episode, the episode was a fail.

Overall, I thought the 1st season was better, even though this season filled in the gaps, it wasn't as captivating to me. However, I will say that the hut episodes with Joan Clayton and Vanessa and then later with Vanessa and Ethan were my favorite episodes of the season. I really, really, really like the hut apparently. One thing Penny Dreadful can always be proud of is the way they do flashbacks. There hasn't been a flashback on this show that I haven't like.

There is talk of another character being introduced and everyone has their money on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which I would very much like to see. Maybe he can help Victor get out of his rut or maybe he'll try to help Ethan's father by trying to find a cure for Ethan in America. Or maybe the character, Count Dracula, will finally grace us with his presence. I do believe it is his turn to try to seduce Vanessa. Only time will tell and I will definitely be back next season to watch.

Luv ya,

P.S. I never pay much attention to the billing before but why is Reeve Carney billed before Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, and even Billie Piper? How the hell did he get top billing? They don't even use his name to promote the show. I mean the man is good don't get me wrong, but I don't think he deserves top billing.
